Kate Conklin and Bryan Landers present a program of creatively re-contextualized folk songs of Bulgaria. These arrangements represent their nearly 20-year musical collaboration, featuring the highly-ornamented melodies, striking poetry, rich harmonic language, and complex metric structure of Bulgarian folklore and art music. In this unique collaboration, you will hear vocal styles from all over Bulgaria, and extended banjo techniques evoking Bulgarian tambura, auto-harp-like textures, orchestra, and even electronic soundscapes.

This event is expected to sell out, so please get your tickets in advance.

BRYAN LANDERS, banjoist and composer, has played banjo in wide-ranging contexts, from North Indian music and the chamber music of George Crumb, to the beloved animated series Avatar: The Last Airbender. Bryan has a BFA in Jazz Performance on banjo from the California Institute of the Arts, where he also focused on Indian, West African and Balkan music. While earning his degree, he took a hiatus to tour and study with banjo legend Bill Keith, inventor of the melodic style technique. After a stint touring, producing and recording in Nashville, Bryan returned to LA to compose music for film and television, and working as the music editor. Currently Bryan is preparing the first studio recording of his Bulgarian music collaboration with Kate Conklin.
